Take on a Challenge

Have you ever dreamed of running a marathon, or even a half-marathon? Is there a cycle you’ve always wanted to do or a mountain you want to climb?

Taking on a physical (and mental!) challenge is a wonderful way to support the Mater Foundation while having some fun. There are lots of events organised throughout the year that you can sign up to – and we’re here to help you in your fundraising!

Art O’Neill Challenge, 12th January 2018, Dublin

On January 6th, 1592 Ulster princes Art O’Neill and Red Hugh O’Donnell broke free from Dublin Castle and made an escape to the Wicklow mountains. It was a cold, dark winter’s night and the land was covered in ice. But they hoped to reach the safety of Glenmalure Valley before dawn.

Commemorate their rebel spirit and relive a wild escape by making your own trek from Dublin Castle to Glenmalure under the watchful eyes of Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team! Walk or Run you decide but this event is a challenge and adventure for everyone and one you will never forget.

Gaelforce, 17th February 2018, Dublin

Run on mountain trails, grab onto your handlebars down dirt bike tracks and kayak across a reservoir – all on Dublin’s doorstep! This is a brand new adventure challenge for the capital that crosses the divide between city and county.

Choose between a 49km course for the experienced and a 29km course for first timers that will take you up the slopes of Knockannavea and around the waters of Glenasmole.

Connemarathon, 22nd April 2018, Galway

Ireland is home to one of the world’s most scenic marathons: the Connemarathon. If you’ve ever been out west, you’ll know what to expect – rolling grassland, gleaming lakes and bare rock mountain ranges.

If you’ve never been, then this is a great chance to take in the raw beauty of Connemara whilst raising money for a good cause.

Choose between half, full and ultra distances!

Hell & Back, 9 & 10 September 2017, Dublin

HELL & BACK, Ireland’s toughest mental & physical endurance challenge, is the country’s largest and most popular obstacle course run. To survive, you must conquer all the elements thrown at you, whether that is the temperamental weather conditions, the gruelling natural environment or the torturous man-made obstacles .

Berlin Marathon, 24 September 2017, Berlin

The Berlin Marathon is one of the most popular road races in the world, and regularly attracts up to 40,000 people from over 100 countries. It is a wonderful opportunity to run a spectacular course and spend time in one of Europe’s most lively and pulsing cities.

Dublin Marathon, 29 October 2017, Dublin

Known internationally for the warm welcome offered by the watching public, this year’s event is expected to attract 15,000 people. Now in its 38th year, the marathon will take place on a Sunday again, after 2016’s success.
