Make a Difference

We need to raise €3 million per year to make sure we can improve the care for patients and their families. It is you, our supporters, who make this difference to their lives

Family Heart Screening

The clinic screens families for potentially life-threatening inherited heart conditions – such as Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) – and needs €300,000 per year to stay open

Cancer Care

Every day, around 45 people receive cancer treatment in the Mater Hospital. The foundation invests in new equipment, staff training, and medical research to support them .svg

Heart & Lung

The Mater Hospital is the only place in Ireland to carry out heart and lung transplants. Our supporters help patients by funding staff education and equipment that aids rehabilitation

Individual projects

The Mater Foundation funds a variety of programmes and projects outside of our traditional appeals above. We also invest in the Spinal Injuries Unit and End of Life Care, amongst many other hospital departments and wards. Take a moment to read how your donations have helped to change lives.

Future needs

The Mater Foundation is being relied upon to raise more and more funds for vital projects in the hospital. Despite the challenges, we are working with the Mater staff to identify major projects going forward that will deliver big improvements in patient care. Read a little more about the hospital’s plans and how your support is essential to  achieve them.

How We Need Your Support

The Mater Foundation works closely with the hospital to identify the areas in most need of support. A committee of consultants, nurses and administration staff are part of the process and help to identify exactly where this is most crucial.

Whether it’s purchasing wheelchairs so patients can get around the hospital quickly and comfortably, investing in medical research, or refurbishing family rooms so patients and their loved ones have quiet, private space away from busy wards – the patient always comes first.

Research & Clinical Trials

All medical breakthroughs come through research and so the foundation is dedicated to providing adequate and stable funding for those running at the Mater Hospital. We are currently investing in a significant number of clinical trials, some of which have had very promising results.

How change happens

Advancing Care for Every Patient, Every Day

Identifying needs

The Mater Foundation comes together with hospital management and staff after they have pinpointed equipment that needs to be purchased, facilities in need of improvement, special programmes requiring investment, and general projects of importance for patients and their loved ones.

Our supporters organise everything from charity cycles to coffee mornings, give in memory of a loved one that has passed away, leave gifts in their wills, and set up regular donations that we then use to fund crucial hospital projects. So too the foundation applies for grants and seeks corporate support, such as through being nominated as a Charity of the Year.

Improved patient care

It could be exercise bikes that help patients recuperate after heart and lung transplants; it could be a clinical that gives hope to cancer patients; it could be an ECG that helps identify an inherited heart condition; or it could be a family room where a very ill patient’s dearest can make tea and coffee and meet with a doctor in a calm, quiet environment.

Patient Stories

We are privileged to meet some remarkable and inspiring patients that have spent time getting better in the Mater Hospital, and on many occasions, the treatment they received has saved their lives. Please take a moment to read their stories.
