We asked our Dickie Dippers why they've joined the brotherhood and chose to brave the waves this 7th November. Here is what Bob and Ian had to say:
‘Bearly Bob’ Tyler
I’m dipping for: The men of Ireland, to encourage us all to be more aware of our health, get checked and never ignore something that doesn’t feel right.
“I moved to Ireland from Sydney in 1997 with my Irish wife, and over the years I’ve always enjoyed doing my bit for a good cause. I’ve motorcycled around Ireland, stepped into the ring for White Collar Boxing and even tried my hand at Strictly Come Dancing.
“But Dickie Dip has to be one of the quickest, most memorable and definitely coldest ways I’ve found to raise funds, start conversations and make a difference for men’s health.”
“We all know someone who has faced cancer or a serious health scare, which makes this very personal. This November will be my second Dickie Dip, alongside my brother-in-law Eddie, who still can’t quite believe I talked him into doing it again!
“I want to encourage more lads to ‘drop the strides and hit those wintry tides.’
“If Dickie Dip prompts even one man to think about his health or get something checked, that’s a step in the right direction.”
“I can’t wait for the banter, camaraderie and madness of 7 November, when I’ll once again be bearing all for a cause that really matters.“
Ian Mott
I’m dipping for: Those we’ve lost, in support of those still fighting, and in the hope of better outcomes for every man who faces cancer in the future.
“Cancer has touched my family more times than I would ever have wished.”
“My dad sadly passed away from stomach cancer just two days after his 70th birthday. I’ve also lost an uncle to prostate cancer and my grandad to throat cancer. Another uncle is thankfully in remission from prostate cancer, while a close friend is currently going through cancer treatment.
“These are men who have been, and continue to be, a huge part of my life. Some were taken from us far too soon, while others continue to show incredible strength through their treatment and recovery.
“That’s why Dickie Dip means so much to me.
“Cancer is a devastating disease, but advances in research, treatment and care continue to give men and their families hope. By taking the plunge, I want to do my bit to support that progress and help make a difference for other families facing their own cancer journey.”
More than 400 men will be joining arms with their band of brothers in Skerries on the 7th of November to raise life-saving funds for men going through a cancer journey.
The Dickie Dip not only raises vital funds for men’s cancer care in the Mater Hospital. This life-affirming skinny-dip fundraising event gives men the opportunity to have conversations they may otherwise not and share laughs and tears together in a safe, empowering space.
