Early detection saves lives — and your support is making it happen.
In 2022, thanks to the generosity of our incredible supporters, a new state-of-the-art PET/CT scanner was installed in the Mater Hospital. This powerful piece of equipment is now changing, and in many cases, saving lives every single day.
PET/CT scanning is one of the most advanced diagnostic tools available. It allows doctors to see what’s happening inside the body with extraordinary precision. For patients facing cancer, heart disease, or neurological conditions, this means earlier detection, faster diagnosis, and better treatment plans — tailored exactly to their needs. The new scanner is faster, more accurate and allows imaging at a significantly lower radiation dose to patients and staff.
It scans patients at a much faster rate which means that over 1,000 patients each year will have access to a PET/CT service. This will lead to more patients being diagnosed earlier, receiving more sophisticated treatments that can be provided with detailed monitoring, and creates opportunity for new treatment pathways to be developed.
The Mater Hospital Foundation remitted €1.06 million in funding towards the purchase of this new scanner; the best of its kind in the country. The digital PET/CT scanner is critical for detecting and managing cancer.
When you give to the Foundation, you’re not just funding equipment. You’re giving comfort, clarity, and crucial time to patients and their families when they need it most.
