Sophia's Story
I went to the Mater on 31st August 2005 with multi organ failure pneumonia and septicemia while 29 wks pregnant with my second son. My placenta burst and my baby was delivered while I was in a coma, he weighed just 3lb 1oz. After delivery I got worse and the ventilation and antibiotics didn't seem to work. I had 7 chest drains inserted for air leaks, I developed adult respiratory distress syndrome and after 38 days in the Mater ICU I was transferred to Sweden to go on an ECMO machine. I had multiple operations on my lungs in Sweden as they were bleeding on 5th Dec 05 I was transferred back to the Mater ICU and was on dialysis and needed intense physio to learn how to walk again. I spent 10 months in hospital and I am still on 24 hr oxygen but without the staff in ICU I wouldnt be here today. tThey saved my life. I would like to thank everyone in ICU, HDU and St Cecelia's for getting me where I am today.
