Organise a Fundraiser

The Mater Foundation relies on the support of the public and there are many ways you or your organisation can help us in our work to facilitate improve the standards of the hospital and patient care.

Fundraising is a very wide and 'fun' area and it allows you to be as creative and inventive as you want. Whether it is organising a sponsored walk or climbing to the top of Croagh Patrick, our sponsors have come up with wild and wacky ways to raise money for the Mater Foundation. To help start you off here are some ideas to get the creative juices flowing and some tips to help you along.

Fundraising Ideas

Remember the simple fundraising ideas are sometimes the most effective and most profitable!

  • Aerobathon (sponsored per minute or charge those taking part)
  • Barn Dance (ask a local company to sponsor food/venue/music)
  • Book and Jumble Sale (see off all your old books and knick-knacks)
  • Coffee Morning (get all your friends together and catch up on the gossip!)
  • Car Wash (suitable for all ages)
  • Coins (fill a smartie tube/jar with coins)
  • Carol Singing (get a group of friends together for an evening out carol singing)
  • Dress Down Day (swap suits for casual clothes)
  • Disco (organise a 70s disco)
  • Exercise Bike Marathon (complete 'shifts' over a set period)
  • Fancy Dress Competition (have a theme e.g. 1920s or Grease!)
  • Golf Day (invite local firms to organise teams)
  • Horticultural Exhibition (charge and admission or sell plants)
  • Headshave (shave your head or beard for the Mater Foundation!)
  • Indoor Games Night (board games, skittles, cards)
  • Jumble Sale (bargains and home-made produce are always popular)
  • Karaoke Evening (ask a local pub to host a karaoke night for you and charge entry)
  • Knitting Sprint (knit for an hour - provide regulation wool and needles!)
  • Litter Collection (sponsored per item/black sack)
  • Marathon (get fit and run a marathon, get people to sponsor/guess your time!)
  • Mums Run (ask your local school to help)
  • Night In (stay in on Saturday night with your friends and donate the money you save)
  • No Smoking/No Chocolate Day (give up your vices for charity)
  • Old Time Dance (sponsored per dance)
  • Pram Race (babies not included!)
  • Quiz Night (general knowledge table quiz or themed quiz e.g. music/tv)
  • Race Night (horse/greyhound racing)
  • Scrabble Tournaments (pay to play or sponsor points)
  • Treasure Hunt (sponsored/ask local firms to donate prizes)
  • Used Book Sale ( bestsellers at bargain prices)
  • Variety Show (sketches, song, dance, readings)
  • Welly-Throwing Contest (sell your tickets or ask for a donations at the end)
  • Zany Sponsored Activities (e.g. knobbly knees contest)

So, fundraising can be as inventive as you like and great fun too! Whatever your poison, be it ballet or boxing, there may be a fundraising opportunity in it!

Fundraising Tips

Tips for Organising Your Event

  • Ask a few friends or colleagues to help
    It is much more fun if there are a few of you so that you can share out the tasks - and benefit form everyone's ideas.
  • Keep the idea simple
    Try to build in a fun element too! Let people enjoy themselves and then they are more likely to support your next event.
  • Say Thank You
    After the event please thank those who help and those who contributed. It is not only courteous but it is likely to fire them with enthusiasm and they will be more likely to help and donate the next time.
  • Build on Success
    Once you have been successful we hope that you will consider doing something similar again. Clearly what you have learnt first time round is bound to make it easier next time!
