Mater Hospital

The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is truly a National Institution that touches the lives of many thousands of people in Dublin and throughout Ireland every year. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, for over 150 years it has been a centre of excellence in patient care and medical teaching.

The Mater Misericordiae Hospital treats over 66,000 people each year, has over 562 beds (inclusive of day beds), employs in excess of 2,300 staff.

It is home to:

  • The largest Irish 24hour "on call" Accident and Emergency Service
  • The National Cardiac Unit
  • The National Spinal Injuries Unit.
  • The largest teaching hospital associated with University College Dublin Medical School.

Two of Dublin’s largest hospitals, The Mater and St Vincent’s, along with Ireland’s largest medical school, UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science, have formed Ireland’s first academic medical centre, Dublin Academic Health Care. Dublin Academic Health Care is an independent entity with its own board under the chairmanship of Mr Thomas Lynch.
