History of the Clinic

The Family Heart Screening Clinic, 53-54 Eccles St, Dublin 7 is situated opposite the Mater Hospital. This clinic opened as a stand-alone service in January 2007 and was officially opened by the Health Minister Mary Harney in February 2009.It is a free service associated with the public hospital and funded through Charitable Donations, receiving no state support at this time.

The Mater Foundation has been running a fundraising campaign since 2005. The main fundraising week is in February with the Heart Badge campaign.

The first floor in Heart House is dedicated to the Family screening service. The funds raised were used to purchase the equipment required to open the unit: an ECG machine, an ECHO machine, an exercise test treadmill and a Holter monitoring system. This allows the clinic run independently from the busy Cardiology and Cardiothoracic departments allowing us have a shorter waiting time for our patients, and more time to spend with the patients as they come for their screening visit. Future directions for the clinic include fundraising to part-fund a genetics counsellor, to further improve our services.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mater Foundation for their ongoing help and support, and to thank all those donors whose generosity of time and money is allowing us undertake this vital and life-saving work.
