Breast Cancer Appeal

We launched our Mater Breast Cancer Appeal 4 years ago and it has continued to grow from strength to strength. Through our 2007 appeal we successfully raised funds to purchase two new pieces of equipment, a new Ultrasound machine and a Digital Faxitron for BreastHealth Mater (The Mater Breast Cancer Symptomatic Unit).

What is an Ultrasound Machine?

Ultrasound is an integral part of the radiology evaluation of women with suspected breast cancer. It is a non-radiation technique which allows for specific imaging of the breast, this along with clinical examination and mammography helps discriminate between normal breast tissue and cancerous tissue. It is a fundamental part of the triple assessment of our patients. Currently, the BreastHealth Unit has two ultrasound machines. One of the machines is over eight years old and in need of replacement. The new ultrasound machine is expected to have improved resolution and imaging capabilities. We feel that this new machine would not only improve on the detect-ability of breast cancer but significantly enhance our operational and functional procedures within the Unit.

What is a Digital Faxitron?

When women have a mammogram performed one of the characteristics of early breast cancer are the detection of microcalcifications. These are small flecks of calcium in the breast which when detected invariably need to be biopsied to determine whether or not they are benign or whether they may represent malignant change. The biopsies are performed using stereotatic device and mammography guidance. During the procedure in order to ensure that the calcifications are adequately sampled each sample is x-rayed. Currently in order to x-ray the sample the patient is required to be removed from the mammogram machine and the stereotactic device to allow the x-ray to be taken. This is a cumbersome means of performing the x-ray since if the calcifications are not in the tissue then the patient needs to be repositioned and further biopsies obtained. With this new technique i.e. a Faxitron Machine the small cores of breast tissue can be x-rayed independently of the mammography machine. This therefore means that the patient can remain in position throughout the entire procedure. This leads to a more accurate biopsy, which can be performed more expediently and efficiently.

A digital faxitron is a state of the art x-ray machine that is a small stand-alone unit and allows us to x-ray small pieces of breast tissue independent of the mammography procedure. This piece of equipment would be invaluable within the Breast Health Unit.

Money raised in 2008 will be used to purchase a second Digital Mammography Unit. This will represent a vital additional machine, which will allow us to make possible the ever-increasing workload to our clinics.

You can support our Mater Breast Cancer Appeal in a variety of different ways through either making a donation, taking part in one of our annual events or supporting our annual Raffle.

In 2008 we launched our Surgical Oncology Research Appeal funds raised will go towards research into the surgical treatment of cancer, primarily Breast Cancer. Current research interests have focussed on how to combine the best cancer treatment outcomes, with quality of life for the patient following treatment. These studies examine a range of diseases; though primarily breast cancer and melanoma.
